Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is no stranger to being sacked, hit and man-handled--leaving the game bruised and beaten. James Harrison once again showed his thirst to send Browns players to the sideline.
Last season Browns' receivers Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi were knocked out, suffering concusions at the hand, or shall we say helmet of Harrison,
Thursday night Colt McCoy would be sent to the turf, lying in pain for a minute or so after a helmet to helmet hit by Harrison.
"Honestly, I don't remember (the hit)," McCoy told the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram after the game.
McCoy, after setting out a couple plays would re-enter the game and would eventually throw a game ending interception to William Gay.
After such a hit to the head, along with Colts' statement about not remembering the "Hit"--why would coach Shurmur be so quick to send McCoy back in? The Browns are not "in the playoff hunt". I have to give McCoy credit--most QB's would not last a season after just of fraction of smashing hits he has taken in 2011.
Colt also suffered an injury to his left hand:
"I was OK to go back in the game. I'm more worried about my hand," McCoy said. It's unclear how serious his hand injury is.
A helmet to helmet hit, and his injury to his hand--was McCoy ready to get back in the game? Coach Shurmur and Colt both stated that he was "good enough" to re-enter. Did rushing him back in have an effect on the outcome?
"However, after the game, members of the Browns staff reportedly asked that television lights not be used while McCoy was talking to the media, which indicates McCoy might have been feeling lingering effects from the hit by Harrison."
How did Harrison respond:
"From what I understand, once the quarterback leaves the pocket, he's considered a runner," Harrison said. "All the defenseless(ness) and liberties that a quarterback has in the pocket are gone and you can tackle him just as he's a running back. The hit wasn't late, so I really don't understand why it was called."
Harrison wasn't penalized for the "tackle", he was for the Helmet to Helmet ( unnecessary roughness ).
A helmet to helmet hit this violent, injured hand and members of the Browns staff television lights not be used when Colt speaks to the media suggests that Shurmur might have sent McCoy back on the field to soon.
Maybe I am being to critical of Shurmur and I do question his ability to coach at this level. Although I question his play-calling on the opening drive--why we didn't try two QB sneaks from the one yard line instead of settling for the field goal (That's another article). I do question his call to send McCoy back in--we had nothing to lose, except our starting QB.
