The story making headlines around the country was that the Cleveland Browns had contacted the Rams about trading for the first pick in the draft. Because the Browns are in search of a future franchise quarterback, it is presumed that the team is hot and heavy for Sam Bradford.

While “breaking news” like this make for a good read and certainly helps raise sales and advertising dollars in the media, there is simply nothing to the story.

ESPN loves to report the story as salaciously as possible. So if you watched the initial report or read the headlines after, you might have missed the following quote from team president Mike Holmgren, “Absolutely we love [Bradford], as do a lot of people, but in the real world we’re probably going in a different direction there.”

Sure, the team admittedly made a covering its bases inquiry to the Rams. But that is all it was – don’t read anything more into it.
